Architect - Mr Paul Arnold

Scope -
  • Replacement and repair of sandstone copings.
  • Alteration of granite steps and ramp.
  • Repairs to chimneys

During the restoration process Irish Natural Stone Products Ltd. imported Sandstone in block form from the quarry in England to match the existing stone. Samples of the red stone were sent to the British Society and from the analysis we were able to locate the quarry from where the origional stone was taken. The blocks were cut and carved in our factory to match the existing damaged features from the top of the building. The window cills of Trinity College were originally made with Granite sourced in the east coast of Ireland. Irish Natural Stone Products researched the quarries in Co Wicklow and found the grey granite to match the original. The cills were then extended on site to match to windows on the upper floors of the building. Wicklow granite was also used to repair Mullion stones on the Doorways and some lintels over the windows. As part of the refurbishment of Trinity College it was also necessary to install a ramp to the main buildings. In order to do so and also maintain the style of the original workmanship the decision was made to extend the steps. To achieve this modernisation and keeping with the old style of the building Irish Natural Stone Products removed the old steps and made new steps to match the existing. The original steps were built using Wicklow Granite and having sourced granite in an old quarry in Co Wicklow it was cut to size in our factory in Co.Clare. With our skilled stonemasons repeating the style of finish to the stone the planned program was achieved. When the refurbishment of the building was completed the steps could be treated to speed up the aging process of the stone to match to old stone. With the high rate of precipitation of the Irish weather the new stone finish soon becomes difficult to distinguish from the original.  The original flooring stone was sourced in Portland quarries in England. Damage was caused to the internal stone landings and stairways over many years of constant use. Irish Natural Stone Products imported stone blocks from the Portland quarries in England and cut them down to make slabs to replace the old and broken tiles. All tiles were cut to size and aged to match the existing stone. The new stone blends with the old stone quickly with use.
